MRH certified organic Amla (Emblica Officinalis or Phyllantus Emblica), known by many names but the most common are Amla, Amalaki, and Indian Gooseberry, is rich in amino acids, bioflavonoids (like rutin and quercetin), phenols/tannins, phytonutrients, vitamin A,B, C (20 to 30 times more Vitamin C than an orange), trace minerals, enzymes, antioxidants like SOD (Superoxide Dimutase), and glutathione for the building and repair of tissue, ellagic, embicanin, gallic, malic and mucic acids and many other polyphenols that reduce oxidative stress and free radicals, rejuvenates tissue and gently removes toxins, greatly reduces inflammation. A good source of bioavailable iron. A wonderful way to increase energy, build muscle tone, create strong bones, teeth, nails and hair, heighten libido and improve eyesight. Amla enhances food absorption, balances stomach acid, fortifies the liver, nourishes the brain, stimulates the heart (check with your doctor), helps mitigate the buildup of arterial plaque, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, strengthen the lungs, regulates elimination, helps the urinary system, increases vitality, strengthens eyes, improves muscle tone, helps protect against infection, most of all build the immune system. It's good for the skin because it supports the production of collagen and elastin. Not only the outer skin but also the inner skin that lines the digestive and respiratory tracts and all the mucous membranes of the body. Amla is used in many hair tonics as it helps improve growth, strengthens roots, helps maintain color.

How Amla Supports Heart Health:
- German researchers found that Amla is very active against lipid oxidation which is when fats are damaged by free radicals. Damage from free radicals has been linked to arterial damage and other age related conditions. Japanese researchers found that Amla supports healthy kidney function especially in the elderly. Chinese researchers found that Amla supports the healthy lining of the arteries. Inflammatory cells circulating in the blood can stick to and damage the arterial wall causing further inflammation and the production of more smooth muscle along the insides of the arteries. Amla keeps unhealthy cells from sticking to the arterial walls.

There is a big difference between synthetic Vit C (ascorbic and ascorbate) and food based Vit C. The body does not utilize effectively an isolated synthetic form of most vitamins - especially vitamin C. Because Vitamin C is water soluble, we must continually replenish as the body is only able to absorb approximately 100 mg at a time and eliminates excess through urination. Our bodies need all the accompanying nutrients from the whole food for maximum absorption and health benefits.

Amla powder and fruit is very tart and bitter but using only 1/2 tsp in a smoothie or juice mitigates the taste. Personally I use 1/2 tsp of Amla with a tbsp of ORAC Energy Greens, several other powders (spirulina, maca , mineral, cinnamon, roasted cacao), and tsp of organic tomato paste in approx six ounces of water usually twice a day and do not taste the amla. - Trish Seaward, Clinical Nutritionist (CN), Certified Enzyme Therapist (CET).
