Reviewed by happyorganic – "organic ingredients, smells delicious, works really well to block the different type rays of the sun. This product is my favorite because traditional sun protection products are loaded with synthetic chemicals and the Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm has no synthetics, is natural, and certified organic."

This is a thick cream so a little goes a long way. It's wonderful for kids and they love the smell. I personally mix it with the Miessence certfied organic Liquid Foundation (Almond shade) and apply to exposed skin. I look tanned and am double protected by the Reflect Outdoor Balm and the Mineral Foundation. Or I use the Reflect Outdoor Balm instead of foundation and lightly dust with Miessence Foundation powder. - Trish Seaward, CN, CET

We all need regular sun exposure for the health benefits. The majority of sun damage occurs when you are young, putting children among the highest risk for sunburn. Excessive use of most sunscreen and sunblock can be dangerous. In fact, using most types of sun protection products may cause greater harm and increase risk of disease. The vast majority of today''s products are toxic and loaded with carcinogens. These are the most common commercial sunscreen and sunblock ingredients which the latest research reveals may cause serious problems:
Octyl-methoxycinnamate – produces free radicals (singlet molecular oxygen) known to be toxic to cells
Titanium dioxide – causes DNA damage (the cells genetic material) due to superoxide radicals, active oxygen radicals and hydroxyl radicals when exposed to light
Oxybenzone – is rapidly oxidized in the presence of light and inactivates important antioxidant systems in the skin (the skin’s natural protection system). Has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, cell damage, and low birth weight of baby girls whose mothers are exposed during pregnancy.

PABA – produces free radicals in the presence of light
Cinoxate – causes DNA damage (sister chromatid exchanges)
Padimate-O – produces free radicals in presence of light (singlet molecular oxygen) and substantially increase indirect damage (strand breaks in DNA) when in contact with cells
Dibenzoylmethane and Parsol 1789 – produces free radicals responsible for direct DNA damage (strand breaks) <>
Methyl sinapate – causes DNA damage (chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges) Phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid and 2-phenylbenzimidazole – acts as photosensitisers of DNA damage when exposed to sunlight or UV- B radiation

One study found that Octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), present in 90 percent of sunscreen brands, was found to kill mouse cells even at low doses in a study by Norwegian scientists. When researchers shone a lamp for two hours to simulate midday sunshine, even more cells died. And a study in the April 2004 Journal of Chromatography found that there is significant penetration of all sunblock agents into the skin. So, it's a fair to assume that when you use sunblock your body is absorbing synthetic chemicals. And if you follow the recommendations on the sunscreen's label to apply generous amounts of the product every few hours, it's likely you will be absorbing your fair share of potentially toxic chemicals.

It''s also important to make the distinction between the two kinds of sunblock agents: chemical and physical. Chemical sunblock agents protect you from the sun by absorbing the ultraviolet (UV) and visible sun rays, while physical sunblock agents reflect, scatter, absorb, or block these rays.

Sunburn is burned skin so treat it gently. Here''s what you can do if you, or your child, suffers from mild sunburn: If you've been in a chlorinated swimming pool, rinse the pool water off thoroughly, don't rub or use a cloth. Pat dry. Take a cool (not cold) bath. Apply a lotion, cream or oil that contains aloe vera like Dr Alkaitis Soothing Gel. For sensitive areas around the eye, pat cool plain green tea and/or use Dr. Alkaitis Eye Crème.
